THE VIDEO GAME BAR ASSOCIATION LAUNCHES FIRST SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
ANNUAL WRITING COMPETITION OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS

LOS ANGELES, November 14, 2016 – The Video Game Bar Association (“VGBA”) is pleased to announce its first scholarship program to encourage the pursuit of game and interactive entertainment law. The VGBA Student Writing Competition aims to encourage and reward student interest in the field of interactive entertainment law. Entries will be judged based on writing quality, timeliness of topic, insight offered by submission, strength of conclusion, and overall impression.

The VGBA is the nation’s premier international game association, whose members represent the industry’s leading practitioners in the interactive entertainment industry and other related fields. VGBA President Patrick Sweeney explains that, “One of the stated goals of the VGBA is to promote education within the games industry. We expect that this inaugural writing competition will foster interest at the law school level in our industry and provide a unique career opportunity for the author of the winning submission.”

To enter, eligible individual applicants will submit an original paper on a current legal-focused topic pertaining to the video game industry. Examples may include issues related to Intellectual Property, Right of Publicity, Privacy and Data Security or Taxation. All submissions will be reviewed by a panel of VGBA accredited members. “Creating a platform for young legal minds to share their thoughts with the top experts in games makes this an exciting proposition for the VGBA,” added Joseph Olin, VGBA Executive Director

The first-place winner will receive a $2,500 stipend as well as round-trip airfare, accommodations, and admission to attend the VGBA’s 6th Annual Video Game Law Summit, May 15-16, 2017 in Los Angeles. This winning submission will be published in the Video Game Law Summit materials book.

The VGBA thanks The Spivey Consulting Group for becoming a co-sponsor for the writing competition. In addition to the prizes noted above, The Spivey Consulting Group, will also provide ten hours of free employment consulting and job search services to the winner. Mike Spivey of the Spivey Consulting Group noted, “It was immediately apparent to me that our company’s interest in helping law students achieve their goals matches up with the VGBA’s goals for this program and we are excited to be a partner.”
